Huskers Return Home for Weekend of Matches

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska men's tennis team will return home to the Dillon Tennis Center after a road trip to Arizona. The 7-1 Huskers will look to improve their record with two matches against Denver and Northern Illinois. 

In Arizona, the Huskers ended with a 1-1 record with a loss to Arizona 5-2, and a win over Northern Arizona 6-1. Against Arizona, in doubles play, in the No. 3 position, freshman duo Isaac Nortey and William Grattan-Smith lose to Jonas Maier and Alejandro Reguant 6-3. Micah Klousia and Dylan Bednarczyk defeated Trent Botha and Filip Malbasic 6-2. In the No. 1 position, Linus Erhart and Toby Boyer were defeated by Igor Karpovets and Carlos Hassey 6-4 for the Wildcats to take the doubles point. This is the first doubles point the Huskers have lost all season.

In singles play, Jonas Maier defeated Klousia in the No. 4 position 6-2, 6-2. Nortey was beaten by Malbasic 6-2, 6-1. Boyer came out on top against Karpovets 6-1, 6-3. Chris Dean was defeated by Reguant in the No. 6 position 6-2, 6-2. Erhart also defeated his opponent Aaro Pollanen 6-4, 7-6 (9). Finally, after two hard fought matches Bednarczyk was defeated by Botha 7-5, 7-5. 

In the win against Northern Arizona, in doubles play, freshmen duo Isaac Nortey and William Grattan-Smith defeated Felix Schumann and Thomas Fisher 6-1. In the No. 1 position Toby Boyer and Linus Erhart fell to their opponents Tim Handel and Ruben Montano 6-4. Micah Klousia and Dylan Bednarczyk sealed the doubles point for the Huskers with a 7-5 win over Lucas Taylor and Sebastian Eguez.

In singles play, Grattan-Smith made quick work of Montano beating him 6-2, 6-1. Bednarcyzk fell to Taylor in the No. 2 position 6-3, 6-3. Erhart defeated Fisher 6-2, 6-3. In the No. 4 position Klousia defeated Chris Steele 6-3, 6-2. Boyer went up against Handel and came out on top 3-6, 6-4, 11-9. Nortey rounded out singles play for the Huskers with a win over Schumann 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

After a postponing of the match at Denver due to icy conditions, the Pioneers come to Lincoln with a 3-4 record overall including wins over Air Force, Valparaiso and Lamar. Northern Illinois currently has an overall record of 9-4 including wins against Omaha, Saint Louis, Green Bay and others. 

The Huskers next match will be a pair of weekend matches in Wichita, Kansas on Friday, March 9 at Wichita State at 3 p.m. and Saturday, March 10 against New Mexico at Noon. The Big Red return home Saturday, March 17 to open Big Ten play with a match against Wisconsin.
