Nebraska has six wrestlers in the third Coaches’ Panel Rankings and five in the second set of RPI Rankings, released by the NCAA on Thursday.
In addition to the rankings, the NCAA announced its qualifier allocations for the NCAA Championships. The Big Ten Conference leads the nation with 80 automatic qualifiers. A total of 283 wrestlers will earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championships with the remaining 47 at-large qualifiers to be announced on March 6.
Three Huskers earned top-10 spots in the Coaches’ Panel Rankings, led by eighth-ranked Tyler Berger (157) and Taylor Venz (184). Colton McCrystal (No. 9 at 149) also earned a top-10 spot in the latest release.
Isaiah White (No. 12 at 157), Chad Red Jr. (No. 12 at 141) and Eric Schultz (No. 30 at 197) also earned spots in the third Coaches’ Panel Rankings.
Five wrestlers are in the second set of RPI Rankings, led by White and Venz, who are ranked seventh at 165 and 184 pounds, respectively. All five Huskers in the RPI are in the top-10 of their weight classes, as Berger is eighth at 157, while Red (141) and McCrystal (149) are both ranked 10th.
Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches’ rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2018 NCAA Championships. The coaches’ rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. In order to be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
The 2018 NCAA Championships are set for March 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Nebraska will return to action next weekend, March 3-4, at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Mich.
