Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska women’s tennis team took down the Eastern Michigan Eagles and South Dakota Coyotes in back-to-back matches at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on Sunday.
The day started off with a 10 a.m. matchup where the Huskers dominated the Eagles 4-0 with both precision and speed.
Junior Paula Del Cueto Castillo and senior Brianna Lashway brought in the Huskers’ first win of the day from the No. 1 doubles spot with a perfect 6-0 victory over the Eagles’ Marie Mayerova and Giuliana Ansaloni.
The duo of junior Vasanti Shinde and senior Katerina Matysova brought in Nebraska’s second doubles triumph in the No. 3 spot, winning the doubles point for the Big Red with a 6-1 victory over Eastern Michigan’s Natalia Regalado and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna.
The Huskers nabbed the 4-0 victory over the Eagles after three swift defeats lead by sophomore Claire Reifeis, sophomore Hayley Haakenstad and senior Matysova. The three seemed to be competing on the same wavelength on the courts, winning each match almost simultaneously. Reifeis led the pack with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over EMU’s Anna Veleva, followed by Haakenstad’s flawless 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Eagle Natalia Regalado, and Matysova closed the match with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Eastern Michigan’s Andrea Martinovska.
After a two-hour break, the invigorated squad returned to the courts at 1:30 p.m. to embark on its 6-0 victory over the South Dakota Coyotes.
The Del Cueto Castillo and Lashway duo led another 6-0 polished victory in doubles play against South Dakota’s Anastasiia Bondarenko and Nanette Nylund to kick off the match.
Matysova and junior Marina Cozac broke away from Coyotes Jana Lazarevic and Luana Stanciu to bring in Nebraska’s second doubles win, 6-2, and Nebraska collected its first point of the match.
In singles play, even matchups caused neck-to-neck battles to ensue on each court, but almost every Nebraska player managed to pull away and capture a win.
Reifeis led the Husker pack out of the No. 2 spot in her steady domination over Coyote Barbora Kollarova, 6-3, 6-3. Immediately after, Matysova clinched Nebraska’s second singles win from the No. 3 spot in a takedown of SDU’s Habiba Aly, 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Jeannie Lozowski then locked down Nebraska’s defeat of South Dakota with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Coyote Stanciu from the No. 4 spot, followed by No. 5 Haakenstad and No. 6 sophomore M’Balia Bangoura’s two-point addition to the Huskers’ final score with conquerings of SDU’s Bondarenko (6-4, 6-1) and Nylund (6-4, 6-2), respectively.
The 4-0 defeat of the Eagles and 6-0 defeat of the Coyotes brings the Huskers’ 2018 season record to 3-2. Nebraska competes again next weekend as it hosts the SIUE Cougars and North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Saturday, Feb. 10. Play in the first match against the Cougars will kick off at 1 p.m., followed by a 4:30 p.m start time against the Fighting Hawks.
