Huskers Take on the Tennis Buddies

Lincoln -- For the second time ever the Nebraska men's tennis team takes on one of its toughest opponents, The Tennis Buddies. The event will be Saturday, Feb. 3, at 4 p.m. at the Dillon Tennis Center.

Established in 2008 Lincoln Tennis Buddies is a program that provides training opportunities for athletes with developmental and physical disabilities. The program was started by Phil Wolfe and is sanctioned by Special Olympics of Nebraska. Wolfe is a former Nebraska Teacher of the Year and was the Nebraska's tennis coach during the National Games in 2010. Wolfe was also the assistant girl’s tennis coach at Pius X High School in Lincoln. Along with the Lincoln team, Tennis Buddies has teams in Kansas City, Fremont and Omaha. The program is free for all athletes, instructors and coaches are all volunteers.

This is the second annual Tennis Buddies event for the Huskers. Junior Jon Meyer is the organizer for the event and it is something that is very special to him. "I'm from Lincoln so it is a good chance for us to reach out to the Lincoln community," Meyer said. "It's a great way to give back to the Lincoln and community and work with the special needs youth."

The event is an hour long practice, followed by some opportunities for the athletes to engage in some social time with each other.
