Huskers Fall to Commodores, 4-1

Nashville, Tenn. – The Nebraska women’s tennis fell 4-1 to the No. 2 nationally ranked Vanderbilt Commodores in its first regular season match of 2018.

The match, part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend started at 3 p.m. CT with competitive doubles action.

Huskers Vasanti Shinde and Katerina Matysova put on a show during doubles play, often tied in a close race with their opponents from host Vanderbilt. The duo battled back after every point to raise one of their own, until overcoming Emily Smith and Fernanda Contreras in a 6-4 victory.

Also claiming a victory on the evening, was doubles duo Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad. Powering through tough tennis, the sophomore pair earned a well-fought 7-5 final decision. This win at the No. 3 doubles position gave Nebraska the doubles point walking in to singles action.

Fighting a plethora of ranked singles competitors, Nebraska could not claim a singles win.

Senior Brianna Lashway pocketed a set win over Emma Kurtz of the Commodores and was headed into her third deciding set when the match was called at 4-1.

Haakenstad was also ahead in her set, leading 5-2 against Vanderbilt’s Emily Smith before the match ended sending Nebraska into day two of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

The Huskers will play Virginia on Saturday at 9 a.m. and doubles action will lead off the morning at the Currey Tennis Center.
