LINCOLN, Neb.—The 2017 Big Ten Regular Season Co-Champions will face off in Lincoln this weekend, as Nebraska women’s gymnastics hosts Michigan on Saturday at the Devaney Center at 2 p.m.
Nebraska, (2-0 Overall, 2-0 Big Ten) is coming off their best performance of the young season, after defeating Rutgers 196.300-192.975. The Huskers’ recorded 196.300 in just the second meet of the season, in 2017, the Huskers did not eclipse that mark until the fifth meet of the season. Against Rutgers, the Huskers either swept or claimed a share of each event title, as four Huskers; Abbie Epperson, Grace Williams, Megan Schweihofer and Sierra Hassel, shared the beam title with Belle Huang of Rutgers, each with a score of 9.825.
Sienna Crouse won the floor with a tied-career-high score of 9.90, and won the vault with a score of 9.825. She was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week on Jan. 22 for her performance. Notably, Crouse is tied for the highest vault score in the country with a 9.95, and was the first gymnast to post the mark in 2018 in the Huskers’ first meet at Penn State. Five other gymnasts in the nation have since tied the score.
Taylor Houchin won the uneven bars event title with a career-high score of 9.90 against Rutgers, and could be instrumental against the Wolverines as the Huskers outscore Michigan (3-0 Overall, 2-0 Big Ten) in every event except bars, where Michigan is tied for fourth nationally.
Both Nebraska and Michigan have reigned at the top of the Big Ten since the Huskers joined the conference in 2010. All time against Michigan, Nebraska is 20-26-1. Last year in Ann Arbor, Mich., the Huskers fell to the Wolverines 197.225-194.800. In 2018, Michigan is undefeated through three weeks including one road meet. Last weekend at Illinois, senior Paige Zaziski won the bars event with a 9.90, while junior Emma McLean tied for the floor title with a 9.875.
The meet will serve as a Kids Day at Nebraska, with exciting activities planned for kids when the doors open at 1 p.m. In the South Lobby, kids can enjoy poster making, face painting, balloon twisting, a selfie station with the Big Ten 2017 Regular Season Trophy, and giant corn hole toss. Admission for adults is $5, while children 7 and older and seniors are $3. UNL Students and children under six can enjoy free admission.
The Huskers will begin the meet on vault, before rotating to bars, beam and floor. A live stream (paid subscription) and live scoring for the meet will be available at Huskers.com.
