Pre-Illinois
Junior Defensive Lineman Mick Stoltenberg
On defensive depth
“Guys are getting a lot more experience, I think that’s important. We are developing depth. A lot of guys have kind of been injured and things like that. Aaron (Williams) went out in the game with a targeting call. It’s kind of fun to see some of those young guys step up and make an impact. It’s something that is really going to help us down the line, Big Ten season, and having that depth and more guys to get in the game and make an impact is going to be great.”
On game preparation
“Not panicking, focusing on the fundamentals with the little things and making sure we’re practicing hard, you know that’s where it all starts is through the week in practice and making sure our preparation is fast, physical and not really giving up during the week is really important.”
On playing on Friday
“I think it’ll be fine. We came in yesterday. Sundays are usually our day off. We came in and got the recap out of the way from the last game and got an introduction to Illinois. I think we’re just moving things back a day. I think guys are feeling pretty good. We didn’t take that many plays on defense, so I think guys will bounce back fine and be ready for Friday.”
On defensive line rotation
“The rotation is huge. You know, getting guys in, fresh bodies, and fresh legs is really big especially like I said through a long season. We have a lot of sub packages, guys that we put on in third down we know that are going to get after the passer. Guys like Carlos (Davis), Khalil (Davis), Freedom (Akinmoladun), and Deontre (Thomas). Some guys are a little quicker and can get after the passer, Alex Davis. It’s something you’ll see when we’re kind of third and long, we’ll send some guys out there that will get the job done for pass rush.”
On offensive plays
“Me, personally, I do like when we play against teams that stress inside run. That’s kind of where we as a defensive line, that’s our pride point for us is stopping the inside run. It is fun to play teams that want to pound at you a bit. We have a lot of experience with the spread and we’re ready to move on to something else.”
On nose guard position
“It’s kind of just how it goes being a nose guard. You’re right in front of the center, you’re usually going to get double teamed that chips off to the linebackers or something like that. It’s kind of the nature of the job. It’s an ugly position, but you have to really enjoy it. Carlos (Davis) is the same way. He really does enjoy taking double teams and trying to make plays from there and freeing up the linebackers allowing them to move around.”
On the next guy up
“That’s something that Coach Diaco is really serious about, making sure everyone realizes they’re one play away from potentially making an impact and being in the game in serious minutes. You can see when some of those younger guys go in, there’s really not that much of a difference in talent which is great. Those guys are playing hard, they’re fresh and ready to go. I think that’s awesome to see.”
On Carlos Davis
“It’s really important. He’s (Carlos Davis) like the Swiss army knife, or something like that, you could say of the defense. He kind of does it all. He can play nose guard, he can play end, he can play three technique, he can play all over the place and so it’s really important to have him there throughout the game, definitely.”
On Ben Stille
“Watching (Ben) Stille, he’s gotten so much better over the last year. It’s awesome to see his growth. He’s so big and now he’s just getting so much more physical and so much more ready to play football and really, really play winning football. It’s cool to see guys that you kind of knew about coming out of high school that are really starting to make an impact.”
