Pre-Illinois
Sophomore Offensive Lineman Jerald Foster
On the short week
“I would say that we’re fine with whatever. It does make it so the game is closer, which is always good, takes away all of the suspense. We’ll see how it goes, I’m excited just being able to play against Illinois.”
On the Rutgers game
“We figured out what was working best for us and we stuck with it, it’s as simple as that gets. We found our good plays, went away from the plays that were hurting us more at the start of the half. I felt like we definitely found our niche, found our groove and we went with it.”
On having that game on their back
“It was great. Being able to have our coaches and have everybody really trust us as an O-line to push forward and then have our running backs do what they’ve been doing the whole game, which was just run it hard and take in every yard that they could. It was great, having the pressure on your back is always nice. It’s better than sitting on the sidelines and watching the defense have to do it or us just pass pro and watching the quarterback and the receivers having to do it, but having it on us was great.”
On the running backs
“It doesn’t matter who’s back there, we all know that they’re going to give it all they’ve got the same. We understand they’ve been taught well by Coach Davis and get every single yard, like I’ve said. We’re happy to have whoever is in the backfield back there because we know they’re going to work for us.”
On pushing the pile
“We understand if our running backs are going to be trying as hard as they are, which I would hope everybody is able to see that, how many yards after contact they get. If they’re going to do that and then they get stood up one out of 10 times, we’ll come and see if we can’t help out and give them that extra push. That’s just the thing that brings the running backs and the O-line that much closer together. We’re all really at that moment going for the same goal which is as many yards as we can going forward. I love it, it’s a great feeling to be able to keep it going and not hear the whistle because that’s all I’m listening for, to see if the whistle blows or if we’re just going to be able to keep pushing for the whole five or 10 yards, so I’m happy for it.”
The crowd likes it, too?
“Oh yeah, you get the crowd going, everybody’s cheering. It’s a whole lot of fun.”
On Michael Decker
“He’s as calm and collected as Cole (Conrad) is. They both understand the game, they both understand what they need to do. Being able to have centers in both of them as guys that can put us in the right way, put us in order and make it so our blocks are that much easier because we don’t really have to think as much just because they really do get what’s going on out there. It really does make the game that much easier for you, and you can slow down and see the blitzes and see things coming at you.”
On Brenden Jaimes
“I think he played well. Him doing what he did, coming out and playing the game that he played was, at least in my eyes, great. It was great to see him step up to the plate and do what he needed to do to be able to give us that victory. I feel like Jaimes being a young guy, I would’ve came in with more nerves than he did. He definitely exceeded my expectations, and I’m happy to have him playing with us.”
On the injuries
“We’ll be healthy down the stretch. I’m happy to see everybody that is hurt in the training room doing what they need to do with all of the extra time that they have. When they’re doing that, and the guys are really just trying to get back on the field so we’ll be able to be a complete team is always great to see. With the injuries we do have, I know that everybody is going to be working their hardest so that they can see the field again.”
On Illinois two years ago
“I would say that we just didn’t play our game to what we could’ve. It’s going to be fun being able to go back there. I enjoyed their atmosphere, I enjoyed what the stadium had to bring. I’m going to be happy to see if we can’t do something different this year.”
