Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.)
Pre-Rutgers
Chris Weber, Senior, Linebacker
On moving forward and being an example
“I mean just lead by example. That’s kind of what I am going to do this week is put my head down and let’s go to work. We’ve got to get better. We have a good team coming in on Saturday. A new season kind of starts in a way. We’ve got to be ready.”
On improving
“We lost a game in Memorial Stadium so I don’t know. I think the best way you deal with that is you come to work ready to go. You put your head down, you grab your lunch pale and say, ‘There’s nothing we can do about it now except move forward, learn from it and getter better this week.’”
On the leaders before him
“I just admired how they came and they didn’t let it affect how they prepared or how they went about their week. They were the same guy whether we won or lost. That’s the type of leader I want to be. That’s the type of football player I want to be.”
On defense improving from Oregon
“We did a lot of things better on Saturday especially jumping from the week before. [There’s] stuff that we can continue to improve on. We made a good jump on Saturday. I would’ve loved to keep them out of the end zone at the end.”
On keeping the defense healthy
“With some of the offenses that we’ve been playing early on it has been helpful to keep guys fresh to give you a long year in the Big Ten, and that’s another great perk of that is to rotate guys and keep guys fresh. Keep them healthy for the season.”
On linebackers stepping up
“Tyrin (Ferguson) came in and it’s been pretty seamless. He plays hard and when you have that you can coach a lot of the other things. We’ve had a lot of guys step into new roles, like Luke Gifford didn’t play a lot of linebacker position, but he’s stepped in and done a great job.”
On going into conference play
“We’re 1-2 right now, but we’re starting a new season. A new Big Ten season where our goal is to reach Indianapolis and that’s still out there for us, and we have to take the first step toward that on Saturday.”
On confidence in the offense
“I’ve been playing against these guys for four years now. This spring and fall is no different. We have a ton of play-makers on offense, a ton of guys that are extremely capable of making plays. I have all the confidence in the world that they are going to do that because I’ve seen that day in and day out. I’ve seen what they can do.”
On game mentality
“I just try and focus on what I am supposed to do on defense. If they (offense) go three and out, then we’re up. That’s how I look at it.”
On teams moving players around during the game and how to approach it
“I haven’t had a huge chance to look at them (Rutgers) a whole lot. When teams do that, it’s important to recognize who’s in the game and how they are trying to attack you. Northern Illinois brought in a different quarterback a couple times this week. They had a different package that they were running with them. It is important to realize how they are trying to attack you because it’s going to be different.”
On how to approach different players in game
“Realizing who’s in and what they are really trying to focus on in those packages and being ready to stop it.”
On adjusting to different offenses
“I think we’ve had like three weeks of similar offenses where the first team we played was really, really fast. This team wasn’t as fast, this past week. It’s been good for us to get adjusted to and to see some of that to prepare for each week and to get better at playing against it.”
On the defense becoming comfortable
“It’s slowed down quite a bit as far as getting the call and getting the line. [They’re] simple things but doing it in Memorial Stadium against another opponent, all that experience is going to help guys, and as we continue to go along guys are going to continue to get more comfortable in doing that.”
On Tanner Lee
“Ever since Tanner’s (Lee) been here, he’s a special guy as far as what he can do on the football field but also the presence he has in the locker room. I have all the confidence in the world that he’s going to get back up and be himself. He’s Tanner Lee and he’s going to do great for us.”
