Midland, Texas – The Nebraska women’s tennis team picked up one more win during its last day at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational, bringing the team to a total of 19 wins this weekend. The Huskers competed in the singles consolation finals and extra singles matches before heading back home to Lincoln on Sunday.
The morning began with the finals for the singles consolation draw, featuring Nebraska’s Jeannie Lozowski and University of Alabama Birmingham’s Alexandra Shchipakina. The NU sophomore started the match with a 3-6 victory set over Shchipakina, but fell to the UAB junior in the second set, 7-5. In a thrilling back-and-forth tiebreaker game to decide the champion, Shchipakina came out on top with a 10-8 victory.
Emma Worley lead the team in a round of extra singles matches with her win over Lana Rush of Texas Tech University, 6-4, 6-2. Assistant Head Coach German Dalmagro said the Midland Invitational was overall a good weekend for the team.
“We competed against great competition, and we had a lot of close matches,” Dalmagro said. “Some went our way and some didn’t; what I’m most proud of is the fight throughout the whole weekend for the team. We have been working hard at practice and I can see them applying what we worked on, and in some of the losses we had plenty of opportunities to come up with the win. We will go back and keep working on closing matches. We are better today than we were last year at this time, so I’m happy with the progress and I look forward seeing them compete and play again next weekend.”
Next weekend, the Huskers travel to the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., hosted by the University of Minnesota. The invitational will run Friday, Sept. 22, through Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017.
