Shawn Eichorst landed a legendary Nebraska All-America football player as one of three special guests in tonight’s one-hour Husker Athletics Radio Show that begins at 7 p.m. CT on the Husker Sports Network.
“I am humbled by my selection into the University of Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame today, and I am very excited to be in Lincoln with the other honorees in October,” said Bob Brown, one of only three players in Nebraska football historyto be enshrined into both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
“To be honored like this, I can’t help but think back to a wide-assed kid out of Cleveland who stepped foot into Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1960 to begin a journey that was absolutely fantastic from the minute I got there to now,” Brown told me Wednesday from his home in Oakland, Calif.
“I had the privilege to meet Shawn when Nebraska came to California to play at San Jose State,” Brown said, “It was exciting to hear Shawn’s voice this morning. He is such a nice, charming, person, very charismatic. We had a great conversation, and I’m thankful it was so exciting.”
Brown Describes Nebraska’s Transformation with One Word – Devaney
Even though it has been more than half a century since Brown became the Huskers’ first African-American All-American football player, he made a powerful point.
“You can describe the transformation at Nebraska with one word – Devaney,” Brown said. “Bob Devaney was such an outstanding coach, human being and mentor. He was fabulous…one of the nicest guys that you could ever want to meet and know.
“I can’t say enough about how well I was received by the great fans of Nebraska,” Brown added. “They didn’t treat me like gold; they treated me like platinum.”
Brown relishes the fact that Nebraska launched its record 354th consecutive sellouts at Memorial Stadium when he was playing in 1962. “Our loyal fans showed up every week,” he said. “In my mind, through everything I’ve seen and followed, there really is no place like Nebraska.”
