Palm Coast, Fla. - The Huskers competed in a three-team round robin after being eliminated from the bracket on Friday morning. The Northwestern men's golf team won the Big Ten Match Play Championship at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla. The Wildcats defeated Penn State, 3.5-2.5, inSaturday's championship match.
In a match with Indiana Saturday morning, Indiana won 4-2-0. Senior Michael Colgate and sophomore Jace Guthmiller shared success. Colgate defeated Christian Fairbanks of Indiana 5&4, while Guthmiller defeated Andrew Havill 1 UP. Jake Brown of Indiana defeated Nebraska sophomore Jackson Wendling 1UP. Freshman Tanner Owen lost to Brendon Doyle 6&5. Keegan Vea defeated freshman Cameron Jones 8&6. Senior Justin Jennings fell to Brock Ochsenreiter 2&1.
Northwestern advanced to the final with wins over No. 11 Rutgers in the quarterfinal round and a victory vs. No. 7 Minnesota in this morning's semifinals. The Nittany Lions finished second in the Big Ten Match Play Championship, followed by Minnesota who defeated Iowa in the third-place match. Purdue closed out the event with a fifth-place finish after defeating Rutgers, while Michigan earned a victory over Michigan State to finish seventh.
