Huskers Return to Rockies for Ron Moore Intercollegiate

The Nebraska women’s golf team returns to Colorado for the second time this fall to compete in the Ron Moore Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Denver, Oct. 7-9.

The Huskers will be one of 18 teams trying to conquer the par-72, 6,450-yard layout of the Highlands Ranch Golf Club this weekend. Nebraska will be the lone representative from the Big Ten Conference in the field, which is loaded with teams from the Mountain region and the West Coast, but also includes teams from Delaware and Georgetown. Live scoring for the three-day, 54-hole tournament will be available at BirdieFire.com.

The tournament begins with tee times off No. 1 and No. 10 at 9:30 a.m. (CT) on Friday, Oct. 7, with the same format on Saturday. The final round will have a shotgun start at 10 a.m. (CT) on Sunday.

The young Huskers are coming off a solid showing at the Chip-N Club Invitational to close September. Freshman Kate Smith continued her strong start as a collegian by recording her third consecutive top-15 tournament finish and second straight top-10 showing.

Freshman Smith Powering Young Huskers on the Rise Nebraska’s Kate Smith is setting an impressive standard early in her collegiate career. The freshman from Detroit Lakes, Minn., notched her third straight top-15 finish to open her career by tying for eighth in a 65-player field at the 2016 Chip-N Club Invitational, Sept. 25-27.

Smith matched her collegiate career best with a three-round total of 221 (77-70-74), which included a two-under-par second-round 70. It was the third round better than par in eight collegiate rounds for Smith.

Smith opened her freshman campaign by tying for 15th at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., before adding a tie for eighth in a strong eight-team field at the East & West Match Play Challenge at Michigan, Sept. 18-20.

Through three tournaments, Smith leads the Huskers with a 73.50 stroke average, which is more than two strokes better than Haley Thiele’s school freshman-record 75.63 set in 2015-16. In fact, only two Husker freshman golfers in history have produced season stroke averages of better than 76, including first-team All-American Sarah Sasse (75.89) in 1998-99.

Freshmen to Play Major Roles for Young Huskers in 2016-17 Nebraska will put one of its youngest lineups in school history on the course for the 2016-17 season. The Huskers replaced 2015-16 seniors Cassie Deeg, Morgan Smejkal and Cassidy Stelzmiller with three true freshmen when they opened the season at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic.

Not only must the Huskers replace three seniors, including fifth-year seniors Smejkal and Stelzmiller, they must also compensate for the loss of Haley Thiele. The sophomore from Wahoo, Neb., produced the best freshman stroke average (75.63) in school history in 2015-16 and was Nebraska’s No. 2 finisher at the Big Ten Championships. Thiele is expected to redshirt in 2016-17 while recovering from a wrist injury.

With four open spots in the lineup and just one senior - Sarah Pravecek - on the roster, the four members of Nebraska’s freshman class will get chances to prove themselves in the lineup early in their careers.

Kate Smith did exactly that in pre-tournament qualifying for the opener at Colorado State, claiming the No. 1 position in NU’s lineup. Freshman Annie Sritragul, Nebraska’s first golfer from Thailand, captured the No. 3 spot, while Claire Robertson (Carnoustie, Angus, Scotland) earned the No. 4 position in qualifying.

Smith and Sritragul played out of the top two spots at the Chip-N Club Invitational, while Robertson and Haraden competed as individuals.
