Smith, Gillman Lead Huskers at Chip-N Club

Lincoln - Kate Smith and Emily Gillman led the Nebraska women's golf team in the opening round of the Chip-N Club Invitational at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course on Sunday.

Smith, a freshman from Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Gillman, a junior from Austin, Texas, both managed an opening-round 77 to tie for 20th place heading into Monday's second round.

Junior Audrey Judd added a 79, while freshman Annie Sritragul settled for an 81 to round out Nebraska's team scoring in the wet course conditions on the par 72, 6,276-yard layout at Wilderness Ridge on Sunday.

While Saturday's rain affected the play of the course, the weather was nearly perfect for golf on Sunday with mild conditions, clear skies and a light breeze.

The Huskers settled for a 314 to head to Monday's second round tied with South Dakota for sixth place in an 11-team field.

Kansas State produced the best round of the day with a 292, led by Chloe Weir's 71. Weir was the only golfer to break par on Sunday, while Florida International's Camila Serrano sits in second with an even-par 72.

FIU is 10 strokes back of Kansas State in the team standings at 302, just ahead of a 303 from South Dakota State in third. North Dakota State (305) and UMKC (307) round out the top five teams in front of the Huskers.

The 11 teams and 10 individuals return to the course for the second 18 holes of the tournament on Monday. Tee times off No. 1 and No. 10 begin at 9 a.m.
