Nebraska senior I-back Terrell Newby earned his first watch list recognition, as he was one of 76 players on the Doak Walker Award Watch List released Thursday morning. The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation’s top running back.
The 5-foot-10, 200-pounder from Los Angeles, Calif., returns to pace the Huskers’ ground attack after rushing for 765 yards and six touchdowns in 2015. Newby is also an all-purpose threat, as he was fourth on the team with 24 catches for 159 yards while also serving as one of the Huskers’ top kickoff returners last season.
Newby posted a pair of 100-yard games in 2015, including a career-high 182 yards against South Alabama en route to earning Big Ten Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors. He enters his senior season with 1,360 career rushing yards and 13 career rushing touchdowns.
Newby is one of nine Big Ten running backs on the initial Doak Walker Award list.
The watch lists for national awards will continue to be announced through July 15.
