Nebraska volleyball libero Justine Wong-Orantes is competing with the U.S. Women's National Team at the Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from July 2-10.
The U.S. squad is part of the six-team Pool B with Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba, Peru and Trinidad & Tobago. The Americans open pool play on July 2 against Peru, followed by Trinidad & Tobago on July 3, Cuba on July 4, Costa Rica on July 5 and Argentina on July 6.
Pool A includes Canada, Colombia, host Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Quarterfinals are set for July 8 with crossover second- and third-place finishers facing off. The two pool winners advance directly to the semifinals on July 9 with the medal rounds set for July 10.
U.S. Pan American Cup Schedule and Updates
July 2: USA 3, Peru 0 (25-20, 25-19, 27-25) - Wong-Orantes started each set at libero and had 15 digs as the Americans moved to 1-0 in pool play.
July 3: USA 3, Trinidad and Tobago 0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-19) - Wong-Orantes had a team-high 15 digs once again to lead Team USA to its second straight sweep in pool play.
July 4: USA 3, Cuba 2 (19-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-15, 15-7) - Wong-Orantes helped the Americans rally from deficits twice to defeat Cuba 3-2. The Husker libero had a match-high 18 digs to help Team USA stay unbeaten.
July 5 - USA 3, Costa Rica 0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-18) - Team USA improved to 4-0 with a quick sweep of Costa Rica. Wong-Orantes had a match-high 13 digs.
July 6 - USA 3, Argentina 0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-23) - The U.S. National Team cruised to a perfect 5-0 record in their Pan American Cup pool by sweeping Argentina on Wednesday night, led by Wong-Orantes' 17 digs. The Americans earned an automatic spot in the semifinals on Saturday at 5 p.m. (CT), where they will face winner of one of the quarterfinal matches.
July 9 - Puerto Rico 3, USA 1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20) - Team USA 's chances at the Pan America Cup title came to an end with a semifinal loss to Puerto Rico. Wong-Orantes. The U.S. will play in the third-place match on Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT).
