Shields, White Among Husker Graduates

Lincoln – Husker basketball players Shavon Shields and Andrew White III were among the 58 Husker student-athletes who received degrees during graduation ceremonies at Pinnacle Bank Arena this weekend.

Shields finished his career as one of the most decorated student-athletes in program history. He was selected as the 2016 Nebraska Male Student-Athlete of the Year and Nebraska’s 2016 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient and was also a member of the 2016 Allstate NABC Good Works Team for his work in the community. A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American. Shields finished his career fifth in career points with 1,630 and ranked among school leaders in field goals made (562, eighth) and attempted (1236, sixth), free throws made (429, fourth) and attempted (565, fourth) and starts (112, second). As a senior, he averaged 16.8 points per game to earn second-team All-Big Ten honors while he finished among the Big Ten leaders in both scoring (fifth) and steals (seventh).

White made an impact in his first season at Nebraska, ranking among the conference leaders in scoring (16.6, sixth), rebounding (5.9, 15th) & 3-pointers per game (2.6, fourth) in 2015-16. An honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection. White reached double figures in a team-high 28 games, including a pair of 30-point performances. A junior with one year of eligibility remaining, White hit 87 3-pointers to finish second on NU’s single-season charts while finishing first or second on the team in scoring, rebounding and three-pointers. For his efforts, he was named Nebraska Athletics’ Newcomer of the Year and earned the Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award for his work in the community.

NU’s May 2016 graduates came from near and far to call Nebraska home during their careers. The group came to Lincoln from 21 states, including 23 native Nebraskans. Members of the graduating class also came from Slovenia and Jamaica.

Nebraska continues to feature one of the highest graduation rates in the country, while leading the nation in the number of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans (321) and NCAA Top 10 Award winners (17) across all sports.
