Game Notes

Nebraska won two games on the same day for the first time since Feb. 14...MJ Knighten hit her 17th home run of the season...the 17 home runs are the most ever by a Husker junior and are tied for fourth overall in Nebraska single-season history...Kiki Stokes was hit by a pitch in the third inning to extend her streak of reaching base safely to 17 straight games...Cassie McClure notched her fifth save of the season, tying her career high for a season...the five saves rank in a tie for fifth in school history...McClure has 10 saves in her two seasons at Nebraska, which ties for the third-highest total in program history.

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Iowa with a 3-1 victory in game two Wednesday night at Bowlin Stadium.

Sophomore Kaylan Jablonski (5-3) earned both wins over the Hawkeyes, tossing 5.1 innings in game two and allowing only one run. Junior Cassie McClure picked up her fifth save of the season with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Offensively, Nebraska was out-hit 6-5 but senior Alicia Armstrong and junior MJ Knighten both homered for the Huskers. The win was Nebraska's fourth straight victory, as the Huskers improved to 24-12 on the season and moved to 5-3 in Big Ten play.

Iowa fell to 9-23 on the year and 1-7 in league play. Elizabeth Wiegand (5-7) pitched well in a losing effort, allowing three runs on five hits in a complete-game performance.

Nebraska jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Knighten's one-out solo home run in the bottom of the first, her 17th homer of the year.

Iowa threatened to tie the game in the top of the third with runners on second and third and one out. Kaitlyn Mullarkey hit a fly ball to shallow field where senior Kiki Stokes made a diving catch for the second out and got up quickly to keep the runners from advancing. Jablonski then escaped the jam by coaxing a ground out to short.

The Huskers plated a two-out run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Mattie Fowler began the inning with a single and junior pinch runner Lotte Sjulin was at second with two outs when sophomore Madison Unzicker lined a 2-2 pitch to the gap in right center for an RBI double.

Nebraska made it 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out solo home run from Armstrong.

In the top of the fifth, back-to-back one out singles brought the tying run to the plate for Iowa and marked the end of the day for Jablonski. McClure entered the game and was greeted by a single that loaded the bases. A perfectly placed infield single scored the Hawkeyes' first run and trimmed the lead to 3-1. Iowa still had the bases loaded with one out but McClure got a force out at home and a grounder back to the circle to prevent further damage.

She then retired the side in order in the top of the seventh, including a pair of strikeouts, to record her 10th save as a Husker.

Nebraska remains home for a key weekend series with No. 1 Michigan on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bowlin Stadium. Saturday is the World's Largest Softball Tailgate, which begins at 10 a.m. before the Huskers and Wolverines play at 1 p.m. Admission into the tailgate and the game is free.
