Seniors Lead Huskers in Big Ten First Round

Seniors Cassie Deeg and Cassidy Stelzmiller each fired opening rounds of 74 on the first day of the Big Ten Championships at The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis on Friday.

Freshman Haley Thiele and junior Sarah Pravecek contributed rounds of 75 on the par-72, 6,221-yard layout at The Fort to help the Huskers produce a first-round team score of 298. Despite counting four solid scores, Nebraska sits in 13th place after the opening 18 holes.

Purdue owns a one-shot lead with a five-under-par 283, just ahead of Northwestern's 284 and rounds of 285 from Illinois and Michigan. Seven teams fired rounds of even par or better despite a mid-afternoon weather delay in Indiana.

Wisconsin's Brooke Ferrell stormed to the individual lead with a sizzling seven-under-par 65. Emily Mills from Rutgers heads into Saturday's second round in second at 67.

Deeg and Stelzmiller's opening rounds of 74 were good enough to tie for 35th, while the rounds of 75 by Thiele and Pravecek tied for 45th. Senior Morgan Smejkal enters the second round tied for 55th at 76, while sophomore Audrey Judd completed the Husker contingent with an 80.

The Big Ten's 14 teams will play the second round on Saturday with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CT). The Huskers will start on hole No. 10. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
