Last week more than 100 Nebraska letterwinners and friends participated in the N Club Golf Scramble held at Quarry Oaks Golf Course outside of Ashland. Letterwinners from a number of sports, including football, golf, baseball, basketball, wrestling and track and field, enjoyed the opportunity to meet and golf alongside fellow letterwinners, while competing for a number of hole prizes and team awards.
"It was so much fun to be able to participate in the N Club Golf Scramble, especially with former teammates and new friends,” said Mike Siwa, 2014 golf letterwinner. “It was special to see athletes of all sports and different classes get together to support the future of Nebraska Athletics."
In addition to having letterwinners present from a variety of sports, a number of family letterwinner duos participated in the scramble, including Joe and Chad Blahak, Dan and Cole Pensick, and Dave and Jackie O’Doherty.
“It’s always fun and exciting knowing that both my son and I are Husker alumni,” said Dan Pensick, 1977 - 1979 football letterwinner. “What made this event fun for the both of us was simply this - the foursome we golfed with included one of my college roommates, John Havekost, and one of Cole’s college roommates, CJ Zimmerer.”
Reliving college memories with former roommates and teammates was a rewarding aspect of the event for many participants, including Siwa whose team, comprised of three golf letterwinners and one wrestling letterwinner, shot 15 under par to win the scramble.
“Being in contention down the stretch and winning the scramble with former golf teammates took us back to our playing days at Nebraska and the joy we felt while competing for our school,” said Siwa. “I still remember the atmosphere of being a student-athlete at Nebraska; it was great to see that family environment carry on at the tournament.”
The family environment, weather conditions, and camaraderie from those in their 20s to 80s combined for a perfect golf outing.
“I can’t tell you how much fun our foursomes had being able to enjoy a round of golf on what I consider to be one of the best golf courses in Nebraska,” said Johnny Dorn, 2005 - 2008 baseball letterwinner. “It’s obvious that letterwinners still take great pride in being Huskers and this event shows the support they have in regard to the Big Red.”
More than tripling attendance from previous golf outings, letterwinners are already preparing for next year.
“The Husker staff did a great job as always putting this event together,” said Dorn. “This an event I am looking forward to attend year after year.”
