Shields Earns Invite to Portsmouth Invitational

Lincoln – Nebraska senior Shavon Shields is among the 64 players selected to play in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament this week. The four-day showcase event for college seniors begins on Wednesday, April 13, and runs through Saturday, April 16.

Team rosters for the eight teams will be announces later this week. Shields is the first Husker to earn an invitation to the Portsmouth Invitational since Aleks Maric in 2008.

Shields, a 6-foot-7 forward from Olathe, Kan., earned second-team All-Big Ten honors this past season, averaging 16.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.  He finished the year fifth in the Big Ten in scoring and seventh in steals (1.3 spg) while ranking first or second on the team in scoring, rebounding and assists.

A four-year starter, Shields finished fifth on NU’s career scoring list with 1,630 points, while finishing in the top-10 in field goals made (562, eighth) and attempted (1236, sixth), free throws made (429, fourth) and attempted (565, fourth) and starts (112, second).

Shields is one of four Big Ten players who earned invitations to the event, joining Matt Costello and Bryn Forbes (Michigan State) and Tre Demps (Northwestern).
