Honolulu - Haley Thiele and Cassidy Stelzmiller led Nebraska to an 11th-place standing among 16 teams after the first 36 holes at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Hawaii Invitational on Tuesday.
Thiele, a freshman from Wahoo, Neb., fired an even-par 72 to tie for 11th after the opening round, but settled for a 78 in the second round to tie for 27th (150) heading into Wednesday's final 18 holes at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.
Stelzmiller, a senior from Placerville, Calif., shot an opening-round 74 on the 6,099-yard layout at Kane'ohe Klipper, before adding a 77 in the second round. She enters the final round tied for 31st at 151 in a field of 98 golfers.
As a team, Nebraska produced rounds of 305 and 306 to head into the final round in 11th place at 611. The Huskers are just one shot back of Idaho in 10th, while UMKC sits just three shots ahead of the Big Red at 608. Gonzaga (605), Fresno State (602) and the hosts from Hawaii (602) also are within reach heading to the final round.
The defending tournament champions from Oklahoma State own a seven-stroke lead heading into the final round. The Cowgirls fired a seven-under-par 569 (287-282) over the first 36 holes. Texas A&M and Pepperdine are tied for second with even-par team scores of 576. Texas is in fourth at 577, while Illinois sits alone in fifth at 593.
OSU's Maddie McCrary owns a one-shot lead in the individual standings. McCrary carded a five-under-par 139 (69-70) over the first two rounds. Pepperdine's Hira Naveed (69-71-140) and Marissa Chow (73-68-141) and Texas A&M's Thanya Pattamakijsak (70-71-141) are well within striking distance.
Nebraska seniors Cassie Deeg and Morgan Smejkal enter the final round tied for 52nd. Deeg (79-76-155) and Smejkal (80-75-155) completed NU's team scores for the first two rounds. Sophomore Audrey Judd is tied for 65th after carding rounds of 80 and 79 and to head into Wednesday at 159.
Sarah Pravecek (T77th, 84-78-162) and Emily Gillman (90th, 87-82-169) round out the Husker contingent in Hawaii. The final round is set to begin with a shotgun start at noon central time on Wednesday. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
