Session III: Dudley Advances to NCAA Semifinals

New York, N.Y. – For the second consecutive year, TJ Dudley (184) earned All-America honors with his 9-6 win over No. 2 seed Sammy Brooks of Iowa in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden on Friday. Dudley collected the 99th All-America accolade in program history.

Dudley, the No. 7 seed at 184 pounds, avenged a loss to Brooks in the Big Ten Finals two weeks ago and will make his first NCAA Semifinals appearance tonight. Dudley, a junior from Irmo, S.C., will face 14th-seeded Willie Miklus of Missouri for a spot in Saturday night’s NCAA Finals.

Nebraska is in sixth place as a team with 35.5 points. Penn State (68.5) leads the team standings, while Ohio State (54), Iowa (48.5), Oklahoma State (46) and Missouri (42.5) round out the top five. The Huskers were the only team in the nation to have all 10 wrestlers score points in the tournament as each of them won at least two matches.

Four Huskers dropped quarterfinal matches, but will wrestle for All-America honors in Session IV tonight. No. 7 seed Eric Montoya (133) lost to No. 2 seed Cory Clark of Iowa, 4-0. At 149 pounds, No. 7 seed Jake Sueflohn battled Iowa’s Brandon Sorensen to sudden victory-2, but fell by a 4-2 margin.

No. 10 seed Austin Wilson (165) fell to No. 2 seed Isaac Jordan of Wisconsin, 3-1. No. 8 seed Aaron Studebaker (197) lost to top-seeded Morgan McIntosh of Penn State, 16-4.

Anthony Abidin (141) and Tyler Berger (157) each went 2-0 in the consolation bracket during Session III and will compete for a spot on the All-America podium tonight. Abidin, a New York native, won by a 16-0 technical fall in his first match against Army’s Logan Everett. In the following round, Abidin pinned Princeton’s Jordan Laster in 4:42.

Berger notched a 7-4 decision over Penn’s May Bethea before winning by major decision over Northern Iowa’s Bryce Steiert, 12-2.

No. 13 seed Tim Lambert (125), No. 16 Micah Barnes (174) and Collin Jensen (HWT) were each eliminated in Session III. Each of them went 2-2 in the NCAA Championships.

Session IV begins tonight at 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET). It will be televised on ESPN and streamed on ESPN3.
