Huskers Take First at B1G Five

Columbus, Ohio Danielle Breen won the all-around title with a 39.475 to lead the 16th-ranked Nebraska women's gymnastics team to a victory at the B1G Five Meet with a score of 197.000 on Saturday.

The Cornhuskers (15-3, 7-3 Big Ten) picked up victories over Michigan State (196.350), Ohio State (196.100), Illinois (195.950) and Maryland (195.500). Based on the final results from the B1G Five Meet, Nebraska will compete in the evening session of the Big Ten Championships next Saturday in Lincoln, with action set to begin at 4:05 p.m. (CT).

Grace Williams picked up her fourth uneven bars title of the season, scoring a 9.875 to share the crown. Breen and Megan Schweihofer shared the balance beam title with scores of 9.925, career highs for both. Hollie Blanske earned her sixth floor exercise title of the season, scoring a 9.925, while Jennie Laeng shared the floor title with a 9.925 of her own.

"It was definitely a team effort," Nebraska Coach Dan Kendig said. "The performances picked up, the energy picked up and we finished strong. I'm looking forward to next weekend and hosting the Big Ten Championships."

Rotation One: The Huskers began the afternoon on vault and posted a score of 49.000. Blanske and Laeng led the way for the Big Red, as both scored a 9.85. Breen hit a 9.80, Megan Schweihofer scored a 9.775 and Williams posted a 9.725 to round out the Husker scoring.

After one rotation, Ohio State led the way with a 49.300 on floor, followed by Illinois with a 49.200 on beam. Nebraska was third, while Michigan State sat in fourth with a 48.900 on bars. Maryland had a bye in the first rotation.

Rotation Two: Nebraska moved to bars for the second rotation and scored a 49.150 to hold steady in second. Williams anchored the Husker lineup and scored a 9.875, while Breen and Crouse hit a pair of 9.85s. Catelyn Orel hit a 9.80 and Blanske scored a 9.725 to round out the Husker effort.

The Buckeyes scored a 48.900 on vault to maintain a slim lead after two rotations. MSU hit a 49.175 on beam and Maryland scored a 49.150 on floor, as Illinois had a bye in the second rotation.

After two rotations, Ohio State led with a 98.200, followed by the Huskers with a 98.100 and Michigan State with a 98.075. Illinois had a 49.200 and Maryland had a 49.150 as both had byes in the early rotations.

Rotation Three: NU rotated to beam for the third rotation and scored a season-high 49.375 to make a move up the leaderboard. Breen and Schweihofer led the way with scores of 9.925, career highs for both. Williams again anchored the Huskers with a strong 9.875. Laeng scored a solid 9.85 and McConkey and Blanske both hit a 9.80 for the Huskers.

Illinois rotated to their second event, floor exercise, scoring a 49.250. Maryland moved to vault and posted a a 48.725 for the event. Michigan State moved to the bye before floor and Ohio State rotated to uneven bars and scored a 48.875. 

After three rotations the Huskers took the lead with a 147.525. Ohio State dropped to second with a 147.075 and in third was Illinois with a 98.450. Michigan State held a 98.075 and Maryland sat in fifth with a 97.875. 

Rotation Four: Nebraska moved to the bye before floor exercise.

Illinois moved to vault for its third rotation, scoring a 48.925 on the event. Maryland scored a 48.475 on the uneven bars. The Spartans moved to floor exercise scoring a 49.325. Ohio State moved to its final event on balance beam and scored a 49.300 for the event. 

After four rotations, Ohio State's final score of 196.100 led the way, followed by Nebraska's three-rotation score of 147.525. The Spartans were in third with a score of 147.025, followed by Illinois with a score of 146.700 and Maryland with a score of 146.350.

Rotation Five: Nebraska rotated to its final event scoring a season high on floor exercise with a 49.475 to seal the victory. Leading the way for NU was Blanske and Laeng, as both produced a 9.925. Breen pitched in a career-high 9.90. Williams added a 9.875 and freshman Catelyn Orel put up 9.85 to round out the Huskers scoring.  

Illinois finished up the night on uneven bars and scored a 48.575 on the event. Maryland scored a 49.000 on beam. Michigan State would end their night on vault, scoring a 48.950.

Nebraska returns to action next Saturday, March 19, for the Big Ten Championships in Lincoln. The Huskers will compete in the second session, which begins at 4 p.m. (CT). The first session begins at 11 a.m. (CT). Both sessions will be televised live on the Big Ten Network and a live stream can be seen on BTN2go.com. Nebraska will be competing against Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State in the night session at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
