Being the center of attention is nothing new for legendary softball alum Peaches James who owned the circle during her illustrious Husker softball career from 2001-2004. On the final day of Black History Month, Peaches was flanked by Hall of Fame Track star and Olympic medalist Charlie Greene and Nebraska Baseball alum, President and CEO of All American Meats, Shawn Buchanan (1988-1991). James, Green and Buchanan were featured in a Success Series as a part of Black History Month speaking to approximately 60 current Huskers and other campus student leaders. The event was co-sponsored by the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services (OASIS) and the Jackie Gaughan Multi-Cultural Center.
Introduced by current student-athlete leaders, each alum provided opening remarks and fielded questions from the audience. Charlie Greene, widely regarded as the fastest man in the world in the 60’s, issued several challenges to the audience. “Listen to those around you carry yourself with confidence. Green added, “you belong here and focus on what you do best.”
Peaches James, who still owns numerous Husker softball records and is now a Senior Financial Counselor at the University of Nebraska-Omaha encouraged student-athletes to embrace opportunities and have a transition plan. “Don’t wait until the end or after your student-athlete career to think about your future. “Begin thinking about life after sports now and integrate yourself on campus and in the community,” stressed James.
Shawn Buchanan who hails from Gary, Indiana and played professional baseball with numerous teams including the White Sox emphasized the importance of determination, resiliency and a strong support system. Buchanan earned his degree in Psychology from Nebraska and relies upon his leadership and interpersonal skills as he leads All-American Meats in Omaha. “Treat everyone with respect, empower others, know that you belong and dream big!” Buchanan added, “You have the best of the best at Nebraska, thus maximize the support and the sky will be the limit!
