Cathedral City, Calif. - The top-ranked Florida Gators remained undefeated with an 8-0 five-inning victory over the Nebraska softball team on Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Gators moved to 15-0 on the season while Nebraska lost for just the second time. The Huskers fell to 9-2 on the season, after picking up a 6-5 win over No. 7 Oregon earlier Friday.
Florida put constant offensive pressure on Nebraska. All-American Kelsey Stewart led off the bottom of the first with a triple but she was left stranded there as sophomore pitcher Kaylan Jablonski coaxed a ground out followed by a pair of strikeouts.
Nebraska could not escape another jam in the second inning. Kirsti Merritt was hit by a one-out pitch before Kayli Kvistad walked. Aubree Munro followed with a double to the gap in right center to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. An infield single then loaded the bases but Jablonski again delivered clutch pitches, getting a force out at home and a ground out to first to prevent further damage.
Florida continued to threaten in the third and finally broke through with a big inning. The first two batters reached on a walk and a single before Taylore Fuller launched a towering three-run homer to left field to give the Gators a 4-0 lead.
In the fourth, the Gators loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk. An RBI single, an RBI ground out and a two-out RBI single stretched the Florida lead to 7-0.
Florida then wrapped up its ninth run-rule victory of the season in the bottom of the fifth, scoring the winning run on a two-out single followed by a Husker fielding error.
While the Gators had multiple base runners in every inning, Nebraska managed only three base runners. Freshman Alyvia Simmons had the Huskers' lone hit, while Nebraska's other two base runners came courtesy of Florida errors.
Kelly Barnhill (5-0) tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out eight to earn the victory, retiring the final 10 Husker hitters. For Nebraska, Jablonski battled hard but suffered her first loss of the year, allowing eight runs (seven earned) in 4.2 innings in her first career complete game against a ranked opponent.
Nebraska returns to action on Saturday with a single game against San Diego State. First pitch for that contest is scheduled for 5 p.m., but games can run behind schedule.
