Smejkal Leads Huskers in Arizona

Morgan Smejkal shot a two-round total of 145 to finish the first 36 holes of the Westbrook Spring Invitational at one-over par and lead the Nebraska women's golf team on Sunday in Peoria, Ariz.

Smejkal, a senior from Columbus, Neb., fired an even-par 72 in Sunday's opening round on the 6,269-yard layout of the Vistas Course at the Westbrook Village Golf Club. She added a 73 in the second round to end her day in a tie for 23rd. She helped the Huskers close the day with rounds of 293 and 301 to finish with a two-round total of 594. NU enters Monday's final round in a tie for 13th in the 15-team tournament.

Fellow senior Cassie Deeg (Hugo, Minn.) shot Nebraska's best round of the day with a one-under-par 71 in the opening round, before adding a second-round 76. She heads to the final round in a tie for 40th at 147.

Freshman Haley Thiele (Wahoo, Neb.) opened with a 76 that did not count toward Nebraska's opening-round team score, before carding a 74 for the Huskers' second-best score in the second round. She enters the final round in a tie for 54th at 150.

Senior Cassidy Stelzmiller (Placerville, Calif.) and sophomore Audrey Judd (Olathe, Kan.) each recorded opening rounds of 75 to help the Huskers to their first-round total of 293. Stelzmiller managed a second-round 78, while Judd settled for an 81.

Stelzmiller matched teammate Sarah Pravecek round for round in a tie for 70th at 153 heading to the final 18 holes. Pravecek, a junior from Omaha, is competing as an individual in the 86-player tournament field. Judd is tied for 81st at 156.

Oregon's Caroline Inglis sits atop the individual leaderboard after two rounds at five-under-par 139. Inglis helped the Ducks to a six-stroke lead in the team standings at 567 (285-282) heading into the final round. 

Kansas State and UNLV are tied for second in the team race at 573, while Ohio State (575) and Notre Dame (576) round out the top five.

The tournament concludes Monday with the final-round shotgun start at 10 a.m. (central). Live scoring will be available from BirdieFire.com.
