Raleigh, N.C. - The Nebraska softball team fell short of matching the best start in program history, as North Carolina State scored eight times in the top of the seventh inning to rally for an 11-6 victory and hand the Huskers their first loss of the season Saturday at Dail Stadium.
Nebraska led 5-3 heading into the seventh inning, but the Wolfpack recorded four consecutive hits off junior Cassie McClure to tie the game. Sophomore Caitlin Bartsch then made her season debut with runners on first and second and none out and Meredith Burroughs greeted Bartsch with a three-run homer to right center that gave NC State the 8-5 lead. The Wolfpack continued to hit, tacking on three more runs to put the game out of reach.
NC State (4-3) turned the tables on Nebraska on Saturday, after the Huskers scored six times in the seventh inning on Friday to rally for a victory. With the loss, NU fell to 7-1 on the season. McClure (4-1) suffered her first loss, allowing four runs in 1.0 inning.
Nebraska worked hard to take a lead into the seventh inning. Freshman Alyvia Simmons slugged her first career home run to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
Simmons then gave Nebraska the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Alicia Armstrong began the inning with an infield single, and she quickly stole second. Armstrong put the Huskers on top when she scored on an RBI double from Simmons. Nebraska stretched the lead to 3-1 when senior Mattie Fowler scored Simmons with an RBI single.
Sophomore Laura Barrow then hit the first home run of her career to break a 3-3 tie and give Nebraska a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Back-to-back doubles from Armstrong and sophomore Madi Unzicker pushed the lead to 5-3, an advantage Nebraska held until the seventh inning.
Following NC State's eight-run seventh inning, junior MJ Knighten led off the bottom of the seventh with her fifth home run of the season.
Knighten finished 2-for-4 with a homer, while Simmons was 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and a walk and Barrow also homered. Armstrong added three hits for the Huskers, while Fowler had a pair of singles as the Huskers out-hit the Wolfpack, 12-10.
Nebraska wraps up play at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Sunday with a 9 a.m. (Central) rematch with Louisville. The Huskers defeated the Cardinals, 4-3, in Saturday's first game on a seventh-inning walk-off RBI single from Kiki Stokes.
