Huskers Finish First Round Strong After Slow Start

Palm Desert, Calif. - The Nebraska men’s golf team is in 14th place after carding a 304 in the first round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club on Friday.

Junior Mike Colgate and freshman Sean Song led NU on Friday by completing the day tied for 37th at the par-72, 7,322-yard configuration. Both carded a 3-over-par 75 in the first round. Colgate finished tied for second among participants in par-3 and par-5 scoring with and average of 2.75 and 4.50, respectively. Song started the day on the back nine by carding a 3-over-par 39 before firing a front nine 36 that included seven par’s.

Justin Jennings and Jackson Wendling are both tied for 65th after posting 77 in the first round. An eagle on the fourth hole, a par-5, 568-yard layout, highlighted Jennings first round. Wendling opened the day with a 4-over-par back nine before firing one-over on the front. 

Freshman Jace Guthmiller is tied for 106th after carding 83 in the first round. Kansas leads the team competition at 285 strokes.

The Huskers will continue the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Saturday morning, where they look to continue to climb up the leaderboard. The tournament will begin with a 9:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start and live statistics will be available on golfstat.
