Smejkal Leads Huskers at Stanford

Stanford, Calif. - Morgan Smejkal shot a three-over-par 74 to lead the Nebraska women's golf team in the opening round of the Peg Barnard Invitational on Saturday.

Smejkal, a senior from Columbus, Neb., sits in a tie for 21st in a 70-player field, helping the Huskers close the tournament's first day in 11th place at 314.

Oregon leads the two-round tournament after 18 holes. The Ducks fired a one-over-par 285. The hosts from Stanford sit just two strokes back at 287, while Cal is in third at 289 and Washington sits in fourth at 291.

In addition's to Smejkal's 74, the Huskers counted an opening-round 78 from senior Cassidy Stelzmiller, who is tied for 38th heading into Sunday's final round in the 36-hole event.

Junior Cassie Deeg contributed a 79 to tie for 48th, while sophomore Audrey Judd and freshman Haley Thiele each settled for an opening-round 83 to head into Sunday tied for 62nd.

Only four golfers broke par on the par-71, 6,084-yard layout of the Stanford Golf Course. Caroline Inglis and Marcella Pranovia of Oregon tied Stanford's Casey Danielson and Washington's Ying Luo atop the individual leaderboard at 70. Five other golfers managed even-par 71.

The Huskers close their opening tournament of the spring on Sunday morning with tee times beginning at 10 a.m. (central). Live scoring will be available on Huskers.com through a link from BirdieFire.com.
