Huskers Salute 30th National Girls and Women in Sports Day

The University of Nebraska is proud to participate in the 30th celebration of the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). The annual NGWSD began in 1987 and has evolved into a national event to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, and the positive influence of sports participation.

 

University of Nebraska Women’s Athletics:

  • The first year of varsity sports for female student-athletes at the University of Nebraska was in 1975-76 and Nebraska is proud to be in its 41st year of supporting women’s athletics.
  • Husker basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field and volleyball kicked off women’s varsity sports at UNL, competing in the fall of 1975 and the spring of 1976 (field hockey competed as a varsity sport for two years in 1975 and 1976).
  • Supporting 24 varsity sports overall, Nebraska Athletics is proud to have 14 women’s teams competing at the highest level in Division I athletics, including: basketball, beach volleyball, bowling, cross country, golf, gymnastics, rifle, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball.
  • Of Nebraska’s nation-leading 320 Academic All Americans, 130 are female student-athletes. 
  • Of the nearly 6,000 student-athletes who have earned a Husker letter and have graduated from the University of Nebraska, more than 1,300 are women.
  • 12 Husker women’s teams have won national championships including, Bowling (5): 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013, 2015; Volleyball (4): 1995, 2000, 2006, 2015; and Track and Field (3): 1982, 1983, 1984.

 

Logsdon to be honored with Barbara Hibner Mentor Award

Pat Logsdon, Nebraska Athletics Executive Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman’s Administrator (SWA) will be honored at the 20th Annual Girls and Women in Sports and Fitness Award Celebration banquet on Wednesday, Feb. 10, when she will be presented the Barbara Hibner Mentor Award (by the Girls and Women in Sports and Fitness Committee and Star City Sports/Lincoln Journal Star). Dr. Hibner served Nebraska Athletics for nearly three decades as the women’s Director of Athletics and Senior Woman’s Administrator, before losing a battle with cancer on March 7th, 2007. Following in the footsteps of Dr. Hibner, Husker student-athletes and staff are committed to being leaders and role models for the University and the community. Husker fans are encouraged to support UNL female student-athletes by cheering them on at the following upcoming events.
