Columbus, Ohio --- The No. 8 Nebraska rifle team defeated the seventh-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday by a score of 4,674 - 4,672.
"This weekend our team has shown a lot of drive," head coach Ashley-Rose MacAllister said. "We worked hard every week on the range and we continue to improve. Our senior leadership has shown the underclassmen that hard work pays off. The dedication that I saw on the line today was phenomenal. Not once did anyone give up. They struggled at times, but chose to be resilient and overcome that struggle."
Nebraska came out shooting strong in smallbore, thanks to Rachel Martin and Denise Martin who fired scores of 586 and 585, respectively. The duo received help from freshman Nina Radulovic (575) and junior Jaycee Carter (571). The Huskers, up 2,317-2,307, had a ten-point lead heading into air rifle.
The Buckeyes fought hard to recover some ground on the Huskers and defeated NU in the second discipline. Remington Lyman, Drew Cheezum and Michael Steinel all tallied scores over 590 for the Ohio State, but it wasn't enough to get the win. The Huskers were able to maintain their lead and earn the victory. Carter was the top shooter in air rifle for Nebraska with a 593. R. Martin and Radulovic each pitched in a 589. The Huskers finished with a team air rifle score of 2,357, while the Buckeyes fired a 2,365.
The Huskers have a bye week, but will resume competition on Feb. 13 and 14 when the team travels to Annapolis, Md., to take on Ole Miss and Navy for the last pair of regular-season matches.
"This match, like last weekend has proven the tenacity of this team," Rose-MacAllister said. "I expect we will continue to improve in the next couple of weeks leading into NCAA Qualifiers and conference championships."
