Huskers Third After First Day in Texas

Houston - The fourth-ranked Nebraska bowling team sits in third place after the first day of competition at the TRACK Kat Klash at Emerald Lanes in Houston, Texas. The Cornhuskers registered a 5-1 record on Friday and a 192.6 average in six five-game Baker format matches.

The Huskers (34-14) won the most games on the day, but trail Sam Houston State and No. 8 Stephen F. Austin in the standings. The Bearkats, who are tied with Nebraska at No. 4 in the latest NTCA rankings, are 4-2 with a 196.9 average while the Ladyjacks are second with an identical 4-2 record and a 196.5 average.

The Huskers began the day with an 872-830 victory over No. 25 Jackson State, and followed with a 1,043-1,032 win over hosts Sam Houston State.

NU continued its strong start with a win over Texas Southern, 928-794, as the Huskers ran their record to 2-0 against the Tigers on the season. A close match followed, but the Huskers pulled out a victory against No. 9 Central Missouri, 970-967 for their third win against the Jennies this year.

The Huskers also defeated No. 14 LIU-Brooklyn, 1,085-936 before falling to Sam Houston State in the final match of the day, 1,026-879.

Nebraska won the TRACK Kat Klash a year ago and have finished in the top five each of the last four years.

The Huskers will return to the lanes Saturday at 9:30 a.m., with six traditional team matches. The Huskers begin the day with a match against No. 24 Adelphi, before playing Louisiana Tech, Grambling and Stephen F. Austin. Friday and Saturday’s combined results will determine Sunday’s bracket-play tournament with Sunday’s final day of competition set to begin at 8:15 a.m.
