Toby Boyer Advances to Big Ten Semifinals

Iowa City, Iowa - The Boyer family continued a big weekend at the Big Ten Indoor Tournament on Sunday, as freshman Toby Boyer advanced to Monday morning's semifinals with a pair of wins.

Toby Boyer will face Indiana's Matt McCoy on Monday at 9 a.m., after McCoy eliminated Dusty Boyer from championship contention with a 6-3, 7-5 victory on Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinals.

Dusty Boyer advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Iowa's Lefteris Theodorou on Sunday morning. Dusty, who was the No. 1 seed entering the tournament, closed singles competition in Iowa City with a 2-1 record, after joining forces with Toby to capture the doubles crown on Friday.

Toby, the tournament's No. 4 seed, marched to Monday's semifinals with a pair of straight-set wins on Sunday. The freshman from Ham Lake, Minn., cruised to a 6-3, 7-5 win over Asher Hirsch from Illinois in the quarterfinals, before rolling to a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Penn State's David Kohan Sunday afternoon.

If Toby Boyer is successful against McCoy in Monday morning's semifinal, he will advance to take on the other semifinal winner between Northwestern's Ben Vandixhorn and Michigan's Davis Crocker at noon.

"As coaches we feel if Toby plays his game and continues to believe in himself he can definitely win this tournament," said Head Coach Kerry McDermott.

In other singles action on Sunday, Nebraska's Marc Hermann fell 7-6 (4), 6-3 to Crocker in the quarterfinals. Hermann finished his singles tournament with a 2-1 mark.

Bradford Zitsch added a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6, 12-10 win over Iowa's Robin Haden on Sunday morning to give the Huskers a win in consolation play.

Scott Elsass battled hard but fell 7-6 (4), 5-7, 10-6 to Michigan State's Colin Harvey in consolation play, while Andrew Dzulynsky also fell in consolation action, 6-4, 7-6 (7) to Michigan's Tyler Gardiner.

"We did a very good job in the back draw matches as Ford Zitsch and Andrew Dzulynsky each won their final matches today in straight sets," said Coach McDermott. "Scott Elsass lost a very hard fought three-setter and finished with a very strong effort which is what this program is all about. Playing hard, competing hard, and leaving everything out on the court when you're finished whether you win or lose."
