Iowa City, Iowa - It is an exciting day for the Husker's men's tennis team as their very own Toby Boyer claims the runner-up title at the Big Ten Indoor Tennis Tournament. The freshman from Hamm Lake, Minn. made an impressive mark throughout the entire tournament and shows a lot of potential coming in to his first season playing for the Big Red.
No. 4 Toby Boyer began Monday in semi-final competition against Matt McCoy of Indiana. Boyer played competitive tennis where he went 6-4, 6-3 to move on to the final.
In the final round of the Big Ten Indoor Tennis Tournament Boyer put up a fight agaisnt Michigan's Davis Crocker. Crocker took the upperhand in the first set where he went 6-3. Boyer suffered a loss in the next set as well going 6-2, resulting in Crocker earning the championship win.
This being Boyer's first year competing at the college level, he really took control of his game and made the huge accomplishment of making it to the final round of Big Ten play. The Huskers are looking forward to seeing what Boyer will bring to the court this upcoming spring season.
"We as coaches are so proud of Toby Boyer for reaching the finals this weekend and his effort has been a tremendous example of what this program is all about," said Head Coach Kerry McDermott. "Since the first day of practice until now he has worked his tail off and never complains, but focuses on getting better each and every day to try and make not only himself a complete player but also the team better. He has set the bar high for his teammates and we coaches are excited about the future for Toby and this team in the upcoming dual season next semester. We feel that with the success this past weekend that our guys will continue to work hard, day in and day out and stay focused as we proceed throughout our off season. We look forward to second semester match play!"
