Kenner, La. - The No. 1 ranked Nebraska bowling team had a strong showing in six team matches Saturday at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational, but dropped a spot in the overall standings. The Huskers sit in fifth place heading into the final day of competition.
The Huskers won three of their first four matches at AMF All Star Lanes in Kenner, La., finishing the day with a 4-2 record. Including Friday’s results, Nebraska owns a 7-5 record and a 188.9 average.
Junior Briana Zabierek leads the Huskers in the individual standings. The Lockport, Ill., native compiled a 199.3 average to place 15th on the leaderboard.
No. 2 Arkansas State continues to lead with a 10-1 record and a 201.4 average. No. 6 Sam Houston State holds steady in second place with a 198.2 average, while No. 5 Vanderbilt (194.5) and No. 3 Stephen F. Austin (191.5) round out the top four.
NU defeated Texas Southern in its first match of the day, 962-830. Zabierek netted a solid 223 to lead the Big Red. A 951-859 defeat to Stephen F. Austin followed, before a 889-870 victory over Louisiana Tech in round 3.
The Huskers closed out the day in similar fashion as Friday, with two wins in their final three matches. NU defeated Bethune-Cookman, 998-847, before falling to leader Arkansas State, 1,026-1,011, in the highest scoring match of the day. Junior Gazmine Mason contributed a sizzling score of 254 against the Red Wolves.
For the second day in a row, Nebraska ended with a win over No. 10 North Carolina A&T, 929-897. Sophomore Kelly Belzeski rolled a 196 to lead the Huskers in the match.
The Huskers, who have been eliminated from championship contention, will play three best-of-seven Baker format matches Sunday for a spot at third place, beginning with a match against North Carolina A&T at 8:30 a.m.
