Kenner, La. - The No. 1 ranked Nebraska bowling team kicked its season off with a solid first day of competition at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational.
The Huskers went 3-3 in six Baker matches at AMF All-Star Lanes in Kenner, La., and sit in fourth place in the overall standings.
The Huskers finished the day with a 189.6 average and won three out of their last four matches after starting the day with a pair of losses. No. 2 Arkansas State leads the overall standings with a 204.4 average, followed by No. 6 Sam Houston State (197.1) and No. 5 Vanderbilt (195.1).
Some early jitters contributed to a loss against Jackson State in the Huskers’ first match of the tournament. The Tigers defeated NU by a score of 995-911. The Big Red continued their slow start in the second match, falling to Sam Houston State by a score of 941-928.
The Huskers got back to their winning ways in round 3, defeating hosts Tulane by a score of 981-839. After a defeat to Vanderbilt (980-971), the Huskers closed the day out strong with wins over Florida A&M (935-772) and No. 10 North Carolina A&T (962-874).
The Huskers will return to the lanes tomorrow for six team games, beginning at 9 a.m.
