Wolcott, Colo. - Morgan Smejkal fired a one-over-par 73 to lead the Nebraska women's golf team to a second-round total of 299 at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge on Tuesday.
Smejkal, a senior from Columbus, Neb., notched Nebraska's best round for the second straight day to climb into a tie for 21st in the individual standings.
Smejkal enters Wednesday's final round with a 36-hole score of 150, 11 strokes behind tournament leader Emma Henrickson from San Diego State, but just six strokes out of second. Henrickson scorched the par-72, 6,261-yard layout of the Red Sky Golf Club with a five-under-par 67 on Tuesday. Henrickson opened with a 72 on Monday to post a 36-hole score of 139.
In addition to Smejkal's strong second round, Audrey Judd produced her best round of the young season by tying her collegiate career-best with a 73. Judd, a sophomore from Olathe, Kan., jumped into a tie for 38th with fellow Husker Haley Thiele at 154. Thiele, a freshman from Wahoo, Neb., carded a 76 in Tuesday's second round.
Junior Sarah Pravecek from Omaha provided the Big Red with the fourth count of the day with a five-over-par 77. Pravecek heads into Wednesday's final round tied for 46th in the 86-player field at 155.
The four solid scores on Tuesday allowed Nebraska to climb two spots from 12th to 10th in the 17-team field, which features teams from 17 different NCAA Division I conferences. Nebraska's 299 on Tuesday tied first-round tournament leader TCU for the sixth-best round of the day.
San Diego State took over the team lead with a tournament-best 286 to close the second round at 580. The Aztecs own a six-shot lead over the tournament hosts from Denver, which used a 290 on Tuesday to close the second round at 586. The Pioneers are two shots in front of TCU (588).
Nebraska enters Wednesday's final round at 613, just nine strokes back of Arizona State and Memphis, who sit in a tie for fifth at 604.
