Wolcott, Colo. - Nebraskans Morgan Smejkal, Haley Thiele and Sarah Pravecek posted the top rounds of the opening day for the Huskers at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge on Monday at the Red Sky Golf Club.
Smejkal, a senior from Columbus, led the Huskers with a 77 over the first 18 holes on the par-72, 6,251-yard layout of the Fazio Course on Monday. She enters Tuesday's second round in a tie for 30th overall in the 86-player field.
Thiele, a true freshman from Wahoo, and Pravecek, a junior from Omaha, each added rounds of 78 to head to the second round tied for 44th.
Sophomore Audrey Judd (Olathe, Kan.) managed an 81 to complete Nebraska's opening-round team score at 314. The Huskers closed the first day in the 18-team field in a tie for 12th with Pepperdine. TCU fired a one-over-par 289 to take the top spot in the team standings after 18 holes, while San Diego State sits five strokes back at 294. TCU's Sabina Pena and SDSU's Sirene Blair carded the best individual rounds of the day with two-under-par 70s. Four other golfers managed one-under 71s on Monday.
The GolfWeek Conference Challenge, which features 18 teams from 18 different conferences around the country, continues with the second round on Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. (CT).
