Injuries Force Day Off the Court

Lincoln – University of Nebraska men’s basketball Coach Tim Miles announced Thursday that redshirt freshman B.J. Day has decided to no longer play basketball at Nebraska.

Day, who walked on to the program last season, had been battling injuries during his high school career and during his freshman year at Nebraska. He had two knee surgeries on his right knee in high school before suffering a torn ACL on his left knee during the Huskers’ first week of practice last season. The injury forced Day to redshirt last season, and he accompanied the Huskers on their trip to Spain, but was unable to play because of the injury.

“It has been frustrating knowing that my knees were not getting any better, and I was not able to get back on the court,” Day said. “I thought it would be in my best interest to not play basketball anymore and get my knees healthy.  I also wanted to thank the fans for their support and encouragement during my rehab and know that while I will not be playing basketball, I’ll still always be a Husker at heart.”

“I knew that this was weighing on B.J. when he came to see me last week,” Miles said. “I told him that the coaches and staff would support him no matter what decision he made, and he is still a part of our Husker basketball family.”

Day was a good performer in the classroom, as he was a member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll, and earned a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team last spring for his work in the community.

As a senior at Lincoln Southeast, Day earned second-team Super-State (all classes) honors from the Lincoln Journal Star in 2013-14, averaging 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
