Lincoln, Neb. - The Big Ten Conference announced Thursday the women’s tennis All-Big Ten Team and individual honors. The 2014-15 team captain, Maggy Lehmicke, was one of 14 recipients to earn the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
In her third season as a Husker, Lehmicke served as a leader on and off the court. Playing every match at the No. 1 singles spot, Lehmicke grabbed a 10-13 overall record, earning two wins over conference opponents.
Her efforts were highlighted by notable wins over nationally ranked teams when she defeated No. 51 Denver’s Maureen Slattery on Feb. 27 followed by an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 52 Indiana’s Katie Klyczek on March 20.
Lehmicke paired up with teammate Lisa Andersson to play the majority of doubles matches at the No. 2 spot, where the duo soared to a 15-4 mark, going 10-1 in Big Ten action. The duo produced an eight-match hot streak between March 6 and April 3 where they tallied wins over three nationally ranked teams including No. 43 Maryland, No. 73 Michigan State and No. 52 Indiana.
The Kirkland, Wash. native has earned a plethora of awards off the court and has served a positive role in the community with her volunteer work and involvement in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
In 2014, Lehmicke was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar list, Tom Osborne Citizenship Team and was awarded the Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award. Lehmicke has landed herself on the Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll five times and has fueled her team to earn the Nebraska Herman Award in 2013 and 2014, which honors the team with the highest GPA of all Nebraska women's sports.
