Huskers Gear Up For Final Home Matches

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska women’s tennis team (12-8, 0-7 Big Ten) will return to Lincoln after a four-match away-streak for the Big Red’s final home matches of the season.

Action will begin on Friday, April 10th at 4:30 p.m. at the Vine Street Courts where the Huskers will take on No. 64 Penn State (9-9, 5-2 Big Ten), followed by a dual with No. 18 Ohio State (15-4, 7-0 Big Ten) on Sunday, April 12th at noon, in which the Huskers will honor senior Izabella Zgierska.

As NU’s lone senior, Zgierska has played every match at the No. 2 singles spot and has fulfilled an essential role at the No. 1 doubles spot with partner Mary Hanna.

Going 10-9 in singles action, Zgierska earned her latest win at 59th-ranked and Big Ten opponent, Minnesota, where she defeated Caroline Ryba, 1-6, 7-6 (2), 1-0 (8). Pairing up with Hanna at the No. 1 doubles spot came to a pinnacle when the duo entered the national-rankings, coming in at No. 47 after winning nine consecutive matches to begin the season. The duo remains a force for NU, holding a 14-3 record, going 4-3 in Big Ten action.

Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson also contribute to NU’s doubles strength with their 11-4 mark at the No. 2 spot. The pair has produced a notable 6-1 mark in Big Ten action.

The Huskers enter the weekend holding the all-time series advantage over both Big Ten teams, leading Penn State, 2-1, and Ohio State, 5-3. 

Doubles action will begin on Friday at 4:30 p.m. CT, followed by singles play, with live stats found by clicking here. Sunday's dual will be held at the Nebraska Tennis Center with the first 50 fans recieving #GBR aviators and Nebraska sunscreen. Admission is free.

Scouting No. 64 Penn State

The Nittany Lions head to Lincoln, Neb., while riding a five-match hot-streak, with their latest victory ending in a 7-0 sweep over St. Bonaventure.  Accumulating a 9-9 mark on the season, Penn State has gone 5-2 in conference action and has only recorded one loss at home, with three wins coming over ranked opponents.  

Under head coach Chris Cagle, the Blue and White has gathered a 29-19 mark in Big Ten singles action, and a 10-13 mark in Big Ten doubles play.  

Scouting No. 18 Ohio State

Big Ten powerhouse, Ohio State has earned a 15-4 mark on the season while going undefeated in Big Ten Conference play (7-0). The Buckeyes have earned ten of their wins over nationally-ranked opponents.

Riding a nine-match win-streak, The Scarlet and Gray will travel to Iowa City, Iowa before heading to Lincoln, Neb. on April 12th to face the Huskers.

Ohio State earned their latest win over then-ranked No. 29 Texas, as the Buckeyes tallied a 4-1 victory. Sophomore Sandy Niehaus has tallied a 12-2 record at the No. 3 spot, earning her eighth-straight win last weekend in Texas.

In Big Ten action, the Buckeyes have gathered a 33-9 singles mark and a 14-2 doubles mark, with the sophomore duo of Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus claiming the No. 40 spot in the national rankings.
