The agreement with Journal Broadcast Group will begin on July 1, 2015, and is a five-year agreement that runs until June 30, 2020.
Journal Broadcast Group will carry University of Nebraska Athletics programming on KXSP-AM (590), KKCD-FM (105.9 FM) and KEZO-FM (92.3 FM).
Why was the decision made to move University of Nebraska Athletics programming from Clear Channel to the Journal Broadcast Group?
Through the rights agreement between IMG and the University of Nebraska, IMG must provide a radio network for full statewide radio broadcast which includes an affiliate in the Omaha market.
During the last few months, IMG has been working on renewal agreements with affiliates in each of the markets throughout the state. In the Omaha market particularly, IMG reviewed proposals from multiple groups and determined that the Journal Broadcast Group proposal provided the most complete reach and exposure for University of Nebraska Athletics.
The new agreement will provide for strong, consistent coverage for all University of Nebraska athletics teams, and upgrades and expansion of the reach for Husker baseball and Sports Nightly.
Where will I be able to listen to University of Nebraska football games under the new agreement?
KXSP-AM (590) will be the primary affiliate for University of Nebraska football in the Omaha market. KXSP will carry the entirety of the Husker Sports Network game-day football broadcast, beginning with Husker Game Day five hours before kickoff, and concluding with Big Red Reaction. In addition, for the first time in recent years the Omaha market will have an FM simulcast. KEZO-FM (92.3) will carry a minimum of six hours of the football broadcast, starting with the Coach Mike Riley pre-game show and concluding with the locker room show.
Where can I hear University of Nebraska men’s basketball with the new agreement?
All University of Nebraska men’s basketball games can be heard on KXSP-AM (590) in the Omaha market.
Does the new agreement improve coverage for women’s volleyball and women’s basketball in the Omaha market?
Yes, previously all regular and postseason games were solely heard on an FM affiliate in the Omaha market. Under the new agreement, regular and postseason volleyball and women’s basketball games will be heard on KXSP-590 AM or KKCD-105.9, in case of a conflict with another Husker event.
Prior to each season in the five-year agreement, a tentative schedule for volleyball and women’s basketball will be communicated to identify which station is expected to carry the games in the Omaha market.
Will the Journal Broadcast Group agreement provide better coverage of University of Nebraska baseball in the Omaha market?
Yes, more live baseball games will be heard in the Omaha market than under the previous agreement. All regular-season and post-season games will be heard on KXSP-590 AM, or KKCD-105.9 in case of a conflict with another Husker event.
Under the previous agreement, approximately 40 games were carried on the Omaha network affiliate.
Prior to each season in the five-year agreement, a tentative schedule for baseball will be communicated to identify which station is expected to carry the games in the Omaha market.
How will Sports Nightly be improved with this new agreement?
Omaha listeners will now be able to hear all three hours (6-9 p.m.) of Sports Nightly, Monday-Thursday, and two hours (6-8 p.m.) on Friday on KXSP-590 AM. Previously, only two hours of Sports Nightly was carried in the Omaha market on a nightly basis. In addition, KXSP will carry various Husker features throughout the year.
How will the new agreement benefit all University of Nebraska Athletics teams?
The agreement with an all-sports affiliate (KXSP-590 AM) will allow for additional opportunities for promotion of all University of Nebraska Athletic teams. In addition, Journal Broadcast Group, which owns KMTV (Channel 3) in the Omaha market, will be able to provide cross-promotional opportunities and enhance exposure for each of the University of Nebraska’s 24 varsity athletics teams.
What is the signal strength and coverage area of the Journal Broadcast Group stations?
The Journal Broadcast Group stations will provide a larger reach than the proposal from the previous right holder.
