Minneapolis, Minn. - The Ham Lake, Minnesota native, Dusty Boyer, ended his run on Monday in a tough match against Minnesota's Matic Spec who went on to play in the final. The Nebraska men's tennis junior fought in the semifinal but came up short in the final set. Boyer was the top seed is nationally ranked at No. 64. He showed great leadership and professionalism while competing in the tournament and is expected to perform at this level as the Spring season begins in January.
In the first set of the semifnal, Boyer lost going 3-6 but came back in the second to win 6-1. It came down to the third set and unfortuanatly Boyer started off slow where the score became 0-5 and then finished 1-6 where Spec took the win. The experience showed Dusty what he is capable of doing and sets a goal for him to come back and take the title next year. "Dusty played a pretty solid match in the Semi-Finals and I really thought after winning the 2nd set that his momentum would carry over into the 3rd set but he didn’t serve very well and I felt that it cost him the match", said Coach Kerry McDermott.
Coach McDermot on the overall performance at the tournament and heading into the Spring: "As a team, we were disappointed not to get a few more guys reaching the quarterfinals as we felt they were very capable of doing so. I do give most of the guys credit for bouncing back and winning some consolation matches as it shows the spirit and fight that we will need come next semester in our Dual Matches"
"We need to focus in the off season now with improving especially with making our opponents win points rather than our guys beating themselves and making poor shot selectio ! I feel that right now Dusty Boyer has been pretty consistent for our team from day to day and match to match and we need to get that from the rest of the guys. We haven’t gotten the consistent performances from our guys this semester that we thought we would have and will need for everyone to work hard in the off season and be ready to battle hard come Big 10 Dual Matches next semester! I We feel that this team is very capable of playing at a high level next semester and we are hoping to surprise a few teams out and are ready to battle hard next semester."
The Nebraska men's tennis season will resume play on January 17, 2015 against Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma to kick-off the Husker's Spring season. The teams first home meet will be against Eastern Illinois where the Big Red will hopefully be playing at the new Nebraska Tennis Complex near the Bob Devaney Sports Center and the Hendricks Training Complex. This facility will rank among the elite in the Big Ten Conference and provide Husker student-athletes world-class training facilities. The team is incredibly excited to start playing at the new facility.
