Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska women's gymnastics team held its Intrasquad meet Friday to prepare for the 2015 season. The Huskers worked through vault, bar, beam and floor before an estimate 250 fans at Mabel Lee Hall.
The team gained valuable experience performing in front of judges for the first time this season. Head Coach Dan Kendig was pleased with the performances of each gymnast and the support shown by the fans.
"There were some great things that happened here tonight," Kendig said. "The crowd was just unbelieveable, I cannot emphasize how fun that was. I also thought the more the crowd got into it, the more the girls got into it, which is just fun."
The Huskers return a solid nucleus of gymnasts that including nine letterwinners. Kendig and the Huskers have set the bar and now look to continue off that as they prepare for the upcoming season.
"I am very proud of them. It is a tremendous start to our season. We have plenty of time before Jan. 9 to get even closer to where I want them to be. I truly am plased at where we are right now and the potential of this team is quite refreshing."
Kendig and his staff are encouraged by the depth of the team and the experience each girl will bring. With a few girls sitting out for the time due to injuries, Kendig and staff got a chance to see several gymnasts fighting for a spot in the lineup perform beautifully.
"I thought Grace (Williams) and Kamerin (Moore) were great tonight. All three of our freshman will contribute to the sucess of our team this year. Jennie (Laeng) came through today with flying colors and it was so great to have Jennifer (Lauer) back in lineups."
The Huskers will open its 2015 season on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. for the second annual Tumble N' Rumble combined meet with wrestling at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
