Nebraska vs. Purdue
Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014
Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.)
Sophomore Quarterback Austin Appleby
On offense's performance
"First off hats off to Nebraska. They're a great team. That's a great defense, they made plays. We had our opportunities in certain situations, we just came up a little bit short. All in all, we did some good things but that was a really good team we just played and hats off to them for sure."
On difficulty throwing against Nebraska's secondary
"They really didn't blitz a whole lot. I think it was in the single digits the amount of times they brought somebody. They brought their front four and still got a good rush. They're a great team again and they did a good job covering our receivers. We just have to keep working to get open and I've got to throw strikes when guys come open. It's a team effort and we are going to get this thing straight going into next week."
On the difficulty in throwing in to the wind
"The wind was definitely a factor. We had a chance to take shots when we had the wind at our back and then we really had to grind it out when we were going in to it, especially late in the ball game. The elements are just another factor, we have got to find a way to move the chains, put up points and get some guys open. That's my job as the head guy and we've got to do what we've got to do to win."
On Danny Anthrop's injury
"It's a big blow. He's a great player. He's one of the best players on our team, not only on offense but on special teams the energy he brings. He's a leader in our locker room and we're definitely going to miss him. We've got guys behind him that are capable and they're going to step up, they have to step up. Some guys are going to get opportunities to see what they can do and we need them."
On what to take from this game
"There's a lot of things but we are right there. Defense plays good, offense comes up short, offense plays good, defense comes up short. We've just got to come together. We've got to pick each other up. At times we have got to get both sides of the ball playing the way we can. We've just got to get a way to get that killer instinct, so when we have that opportunity to put the dagger in somebody, we've got to be able to make those plays and put ourselves in a position to win the game. That's all three phases of the game and we have got to continue to keep grinding and get better and get the knack to find a way to put teams away."
Senior Safety Landon Feichter
On Defense's Performance
"I thought we played well. Obviously there's a lot of things that we can improve on. We'll get together collectively tomorrow and work on those. Overall we've just got to make more plays and limit teams from scoring so many points on us."
On whether the approach changed when Ameer Abdullah went out
"They did a little bit of things different and we noticed that pretty quickly. We adjusted and unfortunately didn't come out on top."
On injuries
"It sucks. You never want to see guys go down on your team, especially those two caliber of players. We're going to miss them, I don't know how long they will be out but hopefully it will be quickly."
On his first interception
"I forget what we were in but I think we were in man coverage. The ball got tipped and I was just in the right spot and was able to catch the ball."
Senior Defensive End Ryan Russel
On Ameer Abdullah leaving the game
"It seemed like they were trying to attack the outside. They ran a lot more jet sweeps, quarterback powers and getting the ball in No. 4's (Tommy Armstrong Jr.) hand a little bit more. He was also one of their big playmakers on offense. I think that was the biggest change, who was going to get the brunt of the carries. He definitely stepped up and did some good things."
On the injuries
"Guys have to step up, guys have to grow up fast. There's no looking back, there's no feeling sorry for ourselves. No one else in the conference is going to feel sorry for us. We have to win out to get a chance to play in the postseason. These last three games are the most important games. I'm hoping we can react a lot quicker than we have in the past to injuries."
