Nebraska vs. Rutgers
Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014
Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.)
Opening Statement
“Disappointed in the result today, compliment coach (Bo) Pelini and their football team, they have a good football team. We knew that coming in, but again, coming into a game like this we had little room for error. A lot of corrections for us to make, and a lot of football to be played this year.”
Any updated Gerry Nova's injury
“I don't, I don't think we will (know) tomorrow either, we might have to wait this one out in a couple days."
On aggressive play calls to end the first half
“They were getting the ball to start the second half, I felt like we needed to be aggressive, and give ourselves an opportunity to see if we could get some points at the end of the first half. I told that to Ralph (Friedgen) before the drive."
On if Gerry trying to come back into the game was a good sign
"I wouldn't look into it, what I have found with a lot of injuries is what a player feels like with the injury on gameday is not what the player will feel like the next day. I think we are going to need a couple days.
On how Chris Laviano played after Nova was injured
“I thought Chris did a good job, I thought he did a good job for what he had and what we gave him for play calls. I thought he made good decisions--decisive decisions. I don’t expect him to be perfect, usually hesitation is what gets you in trouble."
On Nebraska's defensive line
"They are every bit as good as I thought they would be. No doubt, they have disruptive people. They have defensive lineman that can win 1-on-1 matchups so at times you only have to rush four. You can rush four and cover better, and like I said earlier this week, I think this is one of the best coverage teams that we will face this season."
On Ameer Abdullah
"I said this week, I thought he was one of the better backs we have seen in my time at Rutgers, that is 10 years and a lot of good football players. He certainly did not unimpress in person, he is very impressive and what I like about him as a runner is you see all the things you want as a runner. Excellent vision, excellent contact and balance, and you see the burst through the line of scrimmage and he has good enough speed to run away from you."
On starting field position
"Starting field position was a big struggle for us, when you start four drives at our 20 or inside and they only started two inside the 20. When you start those drives inside the 20, your chances of scoring go way down. Now you are looking at trying to flip field. We approached it differently at the end of the first half because I thought we needed to be more aggressive. Generally, when you are back there, the first thing you are trying to do is flip the field. You are not even thinking about points at the start of the drive."
On going for it on fourth down -- first drive
"I liked the way we were moving the ball. I wanted the ball first, and they differed so we got the ball first. I was disappointed we didn't make it."
