Nebraska vs. Rutgers
Head Coach Bo Pelini
Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014
Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.)
Opening Statement
“Well we got the win. I'm happy about that. That's about all I'm happy about. I thought we were sloppy, inconsistent and we didn't play at the standard we needed to. I'll take the win. Anytime you win a football game, it's never easy to win. But I have higher standards than what I watched out there today. And it starts with me. It starts with our coaching staff. I don't like the way we played. So I'll open up for any questions."
On the overall game performance
“Sloppy. We were sloppy. Penalties and one thing after another. We were shooting oursleves in the foot. There were a lot of good things, but you can't take yourself out of drives and you can't put yourself behind schedule the way we did numerous times. We were able to get out of it a number of times, but that's just not the way we need to play."
On the source of the bad snaps
“I'm going to have to watch the film and let you know."
On what he saw out of the front four on defense
“Inconsistent. But I'll let you know after I see the film. But I don't think we played near what we're capable of at any phase of the game defensively."
On the basis of the empty sets
“We thought we could take advantage of some of the things they did and get some matchups we wanted to get. I thought it was good for us."
On what sets senior I-Back Ameer Abdullah apart from other running backs in the Big Ten
"I don't know how he compares to anybody else. Ameer is Ameer, and he doesn't need to compare himself to anyone else. He's pretty special in his own way."
On if he was aware that Abdullah was closing in on the all-purpose yards record
"No."
On the overall performance of sophomore quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr.
"I thought Tommy did a lot of good things. I thought he played pretty well. He's pretty efficient in what he did. I don't know what his stats were. I'm not a big stats guy, but 14 for 22. I thought that other than the really bad decision he made on the interception, I thought he did a lot of good things."
On the performance of the offensive line
"OK when we weren't creating penalties for ourselves."
On what happened to junior offensive lineman Givens Price
"He was out with a practice injury. He'll be all right. He should be back on Monday."
On what he saw from the defense
"Sloppy. Bad communication. Missed assignments. Dropping coverage when the quarterback scrambles. Things that will get you beaten down the line. It didn't get us beaten today, but it will get you beaten down the line. We've got to get some things fixed. We need to have some discipline on the defensive side of the ball. We were undisciplined."
On if the team took a step back
"I don't think we took a step back. I just have higher standards than what I watched today. We didn't take a step back. We took a step forward because we won the football game. We still have a long way to go."
On if it felt different playing Rutgers since they joined the conference
"We haven't played Maryland yet, but playing Rutgers was just another opponent. The conference has changed the same way it changed when we came in. you've got to play the way you set it up."
On if senior cornerback Josh Mitchell gave an explanation about the lateral pass he attempted after the blocked punt
"Yeah I think he lost his mind, which made me lose my mind."
On what he saw from sophomore defensive tackle Maliek Collins
"Oh it's hard to tell from the sideline how it looked, but he showed how he can play. Maliek has played at a pretty high level all year."
On how the run game differed in the second half from the first half
"That one time if we would have read the right side, we would have had a huge gain. You know, it's eays to second guess. I think if we can run it, we can throw it. It comes down to whatever comes, we have to be able to execute it. In those three plays, we didn't get it done."
On the offense versus the defense
"Anything we get from Ameer is obviously good. But let me tell you, our game was just sloppy defensively. And really, there were some special teams issues that came up. For this football team to get where we want to go, we have to be more consistent. I've said it and that means our guys have to be mentally tougher than they were today. They have to be more disciplined and execute at a higher level than what we've done up to this point."
