Stelzmiller Leads Huskers in Colorado

Highlands Ranch, Colo.Cassidy Stelzmiller carded a two-over-par 74 for the second straight day to head to the final round at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate tied for eighth place at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club.

Stelzmiller, a junior from Placerville, Calif., played solid golf for the second consecutive round Saturday on the par-72, 6,457-yard layout at Highlands Ranch, including 14 pars, one birdie and three bogeys. She carries a four-over-par total of 148 into the final round, six strokes behind individual leader Kassidy Teare from Long Beach State. Teare sits at two-under-par 142 after notching a pair of 71s through the first two rounds.

Stelzmiller's 74 helped the Huskers move into a tie for fourth with the hosts from Denver in the team standings of the 12-team tournament. Nebraska's second-round score of 296 matched Kansas for the second-best round of the day, trailing only the team leaders from Kansas State. The Wildcats recorded a 292 to move to the top of the team standings with a two-round total of 583 (291-292).

Kansas heads into Sunday's final round two strokes behind Kansas State at 585 (289-296). Long Beach State sits in third place just ahead of the Huskers. The 49ers managed a second-round 298 to close the day at 591, 11 strokes in front of Nebraska and Denver.

While Stelzmiller's 74 put her in position for a top-10 finish, two other Huskers produced better second-round scores on Saturday. Morgan Smejkal fired a career-best even-par 72 to lead the Huskers and jump into the top-30 in the individual standings. The junior from Columbus, Neb., heads to the final round tied for 28th at 154. Her 72 eclipsed her previous collegiate career best of 73, which she produced in the final round of NU's season-opening Chip-N Club Invitational this year.

Cassie Deeg added a strong one-over-par 73 to vault into the top 20 on the leaderboard. The junior from Hugo, Minn., enters Sunday's final round tied for 17th at 151.

Jordan Chael managed a five-over-par 77 on Saturday to round out the Huskers' team score and stay in the hunt for her own top-10 individual finish. The sophomore from Overland Park, Kan., is tied for 13th at 150.

Freshman Emily Gillman added a 77 of her own while playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup in the second round. The native of Austin, Texas, is tied for 41st at 157 through 36 holes. Sophomore Sarah Pravecek (T51st, 159) and freshman Audrey Judd (T60th, 161) each settled for eight-over-par scores of 80 in the second round.
