Smejkal Leads Huskers in Colorado

Vail, Colo. - Morgan Smejkal fired a 77 to lead the Nebraska women's golf team to a second-round 315  at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge at the Red Sky Golf Club on Tuesday.

Nebraska heads into Wednesday's final round with a two-round total of 624 in 11th place, just one stroke behind UTSA and Texas State, who are tied for ninth at 623. The Huskers are just four strokes back of eighth place Long Beach State and just six shots behind seventh-place Lamar (618).

Tennessee and Pepperdine charge into the final round in a tie atop the team standings at 582, 10 strokes ahead of third-place Campbell in the 17-team field.

Smejkal, a junior from Columbus, Neb., led the Big Red on Tuesday with a five-over-par 77 on the par-72, 6,249-yard layout of the Fazio Course at Red Sky. She moves into the final round in a tie for 30th at 153.

Husker sophomore Jordan Chael added a 78 on Tuesday to close the first 36 holes at 154, just one shot back of Smejkal in a tie for 35th in the 90-player field.

Juniors Cassie Deeg and Cassidy Stelzmiller each settled for second-round 80s to complete Nebraska's team score in the five-count-four format. Stelzmiller enters the third round in a tie for 50th at 158, while Deeg is tied for 68th at 162.

True freshman Emily Gillman, competing as a member of the Husker lineup for the first time, carded an 82 to complete the first 36 holes in a tie for 64th at 161.

Pepperdine's Marissa Chow and Campbell's Louise Latorre lead the tournament with one-under-par scores of 143 through two rounds. Tennessee's Hannah Pietila and A.J. Newell are tied for third at even par 144.
